On Monday we told you about a successful telethon held by Friends for Conservation and Development to fund a park ranger program in the Chiquibul National Park and Forest Reserve.  The monies seek to support five rangers currently working in the reserve for a year and after the final tally of the day, over 300 thousand dollars was raised. And while that is a step closer to making that dream a reality for heightened security of our precious reserves, another organization called Belize Territorial Volunteers has intent of constructing an outpost but this structure is only a few feet away from the Guatemalan Border. Today we spoke to activist, Wil Mehia via telephone, who shed some light on their proposed construction.

“We Belize Territorial Volunteers has been around for several years now and we continue to keep an eye on the border and we find it insulting that they are going to construct a conservation post instead of a military post at one mile in from the border line, we continue to report at the border line and the incursions that is taking place so we are making a stand and we are going to construct a BTV outpost and it will be few feet from the Belize/Guatemala borderline because we have been taken for granted for too long and the Guatemalan government and the OAS has continue to demand things from Belize and Belize government show signs of weakness so we are going to make a statement and we are going to make a stand and we are going to construct an outpost near the Jalacte area at the Guatemala border line but the first phase will begin with the construction of a where the outpost is going and we intend to start early December.”

“Have you guys gotten all the clearance needed to construct in that area?”

Wil Maheia – Activist

“We haven’t gotten any clearance to construct but we have also noticed that Guatemalan have gotten any clearance to do anything and they continue to do things inside of Belize’s territory so we don’t expect to have any problem if the Guatemalan did had any problems clearing and building inside Belize’s Territory then we should not have any problems as well.”

Maria Novelo – Reporter

“How much do you guys looking to rise to construct this outpost?”

Wil Maheia – Activist

“The outpost along with the fence around $25,000.00 and it is going to be a basic outpost where people who are monitoring the border can rest for the night to keep an eye on the border so we are appealing the Belizeans to give and we have a bank account if they would like to make a pledge toward the construction of the outpost as Belizeans we have to take a stand.”

For those who wish to contribute to this noteworthy initiative, you can forward your donation to Belize Bank Account # 630-01-1-012460, which is in the name of the Belize Territorial Volunteers.
