Screen_shot_2011-07-18_at_10.44.31_PM55 passengers are lucky to be alive today after the bus they were traveling in this morning flipped over on the side of the road. The incident happened at around 5:00am at mile 65 of the Northern Highway when a Cabrera’s bus traveling to Orange Walk Town allegedly suffered a blowout and the driver lost control of the vehicle. At the time of the incident the bus was allegedly packed with passengers and a number of them, including children were seriously injured. Cameraman Lucio Alcoser was on the scene and captured the following footage.

Carmelita Perez- Reporting

Mile 65 of the Northern Highway was this morning witness to what could have been a tragedy of epic proportions. A bus flipped over on the side of the road, blood stains on the driver’s side and steps, a broken windshield, broken windows and a number of frightened and injured passengers are proof that many lives could have been lost as a result of the accident.

At 4:00am this bus belonging to Cabrera’s Bus Line left Corozal Town and was headed towards Orange Walk loaded with passengers when upon reaching a curve on mile 65 close to the Village of San Pablo the left back tire suffered a blowout. At that time the driver of the bus, Pedro Cowo, lost control of the vehicle which flipped on its side causing injuries to a number of persons.

When we arrived at the scene at least 16 injured passengers were already being taken to the Northern Regional Hospital in private vehicles and ambulance while passengers who escaped injury were left behind to recover from the shock.

Passenger 1

While allegations are that the driver of the bus was under the influence of alcohol and was speeding on the highway owner of Cabrera’s Bus Service Jose Cabrera vehemently denied those allegations.

Jose Cabrera – Owner, Cabrera’s Bus Line

Out of the 16 passengers that were taken to the NRH only five persons including the driver were admitted at the NRH. Among the five is a 12 year old girl whose arm was badly broken. According to Cabrera there are approximately 7 other passenger who were taken to the Corozal Community Hospital with minor injuries. Assistance will be offered to all injured persons, says Cabrera.

CTV3 News understands that while police have recorded a number of statements including that of Cabrera and some of the passengers no one has been arrested and investigations continue.
