Fifty five persons were involved in a traffic accident yesterday morning when the left back tire of the bus they were traveling in suffered a blowout at around mile 65 of the Northern Highway close to the village of San Pablo. At the time of the incident, the bus belonging to Cabrera’s Bus Line, was driven by 43 year old Pedro Cumush. Cumush allegedly lost control of the vehicle which flipped on its side injuring a number of passengers including 11 year old Judith Cantarero who was traveling in the bus at the time with her parents. All indications are that Cantarero’s right arm was caught under the bus when it turned over and as a result she sustained severe injuries.
Of the 16 passengers that were brought to the NRH for treatment only five including Cumush and Cantarero were admitted. When we spoke to Doctor Jair Osorio this afternoon he told us that Cantarero underwent surgery yesterday for an open fracture on the right elbow. Contrary to reports that her arm had to be amputated Osorio says the 11 year old is doing fine and is recuperating from her injuries. Osorio says Cantarero is the only minor who was brought into the NRH for treatment. As for the other four passengers they are presently in stable condition.
When we spoke to Corozal Police this afternoon they told us that while some statements given by Police Officers who were traveling inside the bus at the time of the incident indicate that the driver of the bus fell asleep at the wheel, the matter is still under investigation. According to Corozal Police it is way too early to state whether any charges will be levied against Cumush.
