Today the Opposition put up a fight at the House of Representatives as Government tabled the Petrocaribe loan motion for a second reading. The Opposition is saying that government has not only followed proper procedures in regards to the Petrocaribe funds but that they have spent money from the Petrocaribe fund inefficiently.

“We can’t support a loan motion where there so much waste and corruption, there is only a small circle of conies, hustlers feeding on this Petro Caribe funds, Mr. Speaker blotted contracts, poor quality work, and no value for money, it is a circle of family and friends, even UDP’s are angry. So no equity, Mr. Speaker, nothing for the PUP constituencies and yet you want to come and support this motion.”

Honorable John Briceno – Orange Walk Central Area Representative

“They just doing a cheap and hurry job and there is no accountability, now the Prime Minister will tell you he is no engineer and I would agree with him but he has a minister of works whose people supposed to be out there checking the work Mr. Speaker, whose people supposed to be out there certifying the work, so what is happening either he is not doing his job or somebody is doing something wrong Mr. Speaker because this is not good quality work this is not 5 million dollars’ worth of work Mr. Speaker, something wrong man the Prime Minister needs to fire the minister of works because he is the one that certifies all this work and if the Prime Minister doesn’t fire the minister of works the people of Cayo Central will fire the minister of works.”

But from the eyes of the PM, the situation is a lot better that what the Opposition is painting.

Honorable Dean Barrow – Prime Minister of Belize

“It’s not just as they pretended that they wished to see things done in scrupulous, meticulous accordance with the finance and audit act because that process was already in trade, it is Mr. speaker that indeed they would want to stop the Petro Caribe financing because that Petro Caribe financing is as those people outside are making clear welcomed by the vast majority of Belizeans who also know that the monies are being properly spent on the development of our country. They also pour scorn and bur fire on this PUP opposition, denounce them for their screw face and bitterness and bile for the jealousy and envy and spite and done right stupidity of a party that has adopted a scotch earth policy against the country, a party that would stop Petro Caribe and thereby fundamentally damage the national interest and kill off this unprecedented advance of the people of Belize. Listen to the people outside, listen to the people all over this land and support this motion, Petro Caribe roll it.”

Honorable Francis Fonseca – PUP Party Leader

“It’s not an attack on development as the UDP apologist would like you to believe, it is about stopping the abuse and misuse of public funds, is about putting stop to waste and corruption, it is about the accountability of all future Governments of Belize, it is about governance Mr. Speaker, this is not about the past, we can’t change of what has been done by the Prime Minister over the past few years or what was done before him but our objective is to change the future, to change the future and to send a very clear and strong message Mr. speaker that the next People’s United Party government understands that it must at all times act in compliance with our financial regulations and orders, that is the message.”

By the government’s own account, the funds have been supporting school programs, a call center training program, road rehabilitation nationwide, and helicopters for the security force among other programs. A total of four We will have more on the House Sitting in Thursday’s newscast.
