Screen_Shot_2014-11-24_at_8.32.02_PMP.U.P Area Representative for Cayo North Joseph Mahmud has officially resigned from his seat. The announcement was made with immediate effect today and the resignation has been accepted by the Honorable Speaker of the House of Representatives, Michael Peyrefitte. This comes shortly after Mahmud had stepped down from contesting the next general elections. Late this afternoon the People’s United Party issued a release thanking Mahmud for his service since March 2012 and wished him and his family continued success. Chairman of the Party, Henry Usher says that for his part, he is disappointed in the new developments.

Henry Usher – Party Chairman of People’s United Party

“As the Chairman of the party, I am disappointed by the news I consider Joseph to be a good friend and a brother in the party so the news is not totally expected and to be honest with you the day that he sent in his resignation letter to not contest the next election we had begun the process of selecting the new standard bearer in Cayo so it is not as if caught us off guard we had begun that process of selecting a new candidate.”

“What is the process now, you fast tracking this election of a new standard bearer so what happens between now and that time?”

Henry Usher – Party Chairman of People’s United Party

“Well the constitution dictates that a by-election has to be called in the constituency within ninety days of the resignation and it can’t be less than thirty days of the resignation so we have a time period of thirty one to ninety days in which time there must be a by-election so as you rightly said we fast track the process of selecting our new standard bearer and we hope to have that person in place very shortly and have him or her ready for the upcoming by-election.”

Dalila Ical – Reporter

“Any names that you can reveal so far?”

Henry Usher – Party Chairman of People’s United Party

“We had two persons on the ground who actually applied to run; Mr. Richard Harrison and Michel Shabbat, those are the two persons that have actually launched their campaign and have applied to run as standard bearer for the Cayo North constituency.”

We also asked Usher if he believes that Mahmud’s decision will be affecting the party’s strength in the constituency. He said he is positive it will not.

Henry Usher

“Certainly I am very encourage by the persons who have come forward we have both a businessman and an engineer also an attorney who have come forward out of this resignation by Joseph, so I am convinced that the PUP will continue to hold that seat and that a PUP representative will represent the people of Cayo North in the next election.”

Dalila Ical – Reporter

“How would you respond to the comments that this is another show of the PUP not being ready for the next elections?”

Henry Usher

“No, I would disagree with you  I think if it was a situation for us crumbling to find candidates to fill a seat then that would show certain uredines but in this case as I said we have two credible persons coming up forward and who are willing to be part and I am encouraged by that and I am certainly seeing it nothing as the party is not ready.”

As mentioned before, the PUP is fast-tracking the process given Hon. Mahmud’s resignation from the National Assembly.
