Screen_Shot_2014-11-25_at_8.02.57_PMYesterday we told you about the abrupt official resignation of PUP Area Representative for cayo North, Joseph Mahmud. The move comes shortly after Mahmud had stepped down from contesting the next general elections. And while there is the public debate on why or what his reasons were for resigning from the party, today the People’s United Party held a briefing at its headquarters in Belize City. Party Leader Francis Fonseca says while Mahmuds decision to not inform the party reflects poorly on him, the party will move on with an intensive campaign for Cayo North. Here is that clip provided with the help from our colleagues at 7news.

Francis Fonseca – Party Leader, PUP

“And in fact, that is where we are today, moving forward and yes disappointed the Mr. Mamud has resigned from the National Assembly and I think that his decision to do so and let me make it clear that his decision to do so without a consulting the party, without informing the party, without informing his executive in Cayo North, I think reflects poorly on him and I view that as disrespectful to the party.”

“Do you think that he is a traitor, do you think that he was bought out?”

Francis Fonseca – Party Leader, PUP

“No, I am not in opposition at all to make any sort suggestion at all and I am certainly not prepared to go there at all.”

“They are stating all sorts of things that the party is falling apart, that it reflects on your leadership are you concerned at all in terms of the perception out there because of his resignation, particularly because he didn’t inform?”

Francis Fonseca – Party Leader, PUP

“Everything that happens in the People’s United Party reflects in the leader and reflects of the state of the party so yes we would not have wanted Mr. Mammud to resign I wanted him to serve out his term with integrity and dignity and working on behalf of the people of Cayo North as best as possible given the challenges but he already made that decision and I have already made that I feel on that decision it may reflects poorly on him and that I thinks where it stands that it reflects poorly on him, I don’t think it reflects poorly on us as a party, exactly how we will proceed but we are preparing for an anticipating obviously a very early election that is to the advantage of the United Democratic Party and true to form they will obviously try exploit every advantage that they have so we have to look forward to a very early election probably very early in January and then we have to engage in a very intensive four, five, six, week campaign in Cayo North and we will never be able to challenge the UDP when it comes to money they are rolling in serious money as you know but we have to put a very strongly spirited campaign.”

And today, Governor General Sir Colville Young has issued a Writ of Election, paving the way for a bye-election to replace the People’s United Party’s Joseph Mahmud.

The release says that the Cayo North constituency will go to the polls on Monday, January 5, 2015 to elect a new Area Representative. According to a government press release, Nomination Day will be Monday, December 15 with the Administration Building in San Ignacio town being the place where the nomination of candidates will take place.
