Screen_Shot_2014-12-17_at_8.13.41_PMSchool is out but that is no reason for children to keep their head out of the books. At the Sandy Hunter Library, there are several programs held throughout the year to encourage children to develop a love for books and reading. One such program came to a close today at the library and in celebration of the occasion the children were treated to a small party at the library this morning. Here’s more on that story.

This marks the last activity of the year, but that does not mean that it is any less important. What is being celebrated is the close of a new program which seeks to encourage children, or members of the Sandy Hunter Library to love books. The reading challenge was launched in March and concluded this month.

Elena Carballo – Assistant Librarian

“We had four children participating in it so today we are honoring these children unfortunately one of them isn’t here today but we have three of them as I said is a reading time is not a competition but like in everything you will find one or two kids that will be ahead of the rest right, so this year we have Jamel Tun who will be receiving the first prize for having rad the most books, she read 27 books total, real, real close to her was Frank Magfadzen and he read 25 books, it was a really tough challenge between the kids them because they were the ones who challenged themselves to it wasn’t like us telling them you must read X amount of books but they challenge themselves to read it.”

And for her part, eleven year old Jamel Tun says this experience was worthwhile.

Jamel Tun – First Place

“I joined because I love reading and I thought it might be a fun activity for me to do.”

Dalila Ical – Reporter

“So this was several months I understand that you read the most books, I imagine you did had that fun you looking forward to do.”

Jamel Tun – First Place

“Yes I did, in fact I had wanted to read a lot more books but time wouldn’t allow.”

Dalila Ical – Reporter

“So you juggled school work, I guess chores at home with reading how was that for you?”

Jamel Tun – First Place

“Well, the school work was mostly done at school, the chores I have time to do it because my parents helped me with the reading and the reading I do it mostly on the road because we live very far from here and it gives me time.”

Dalila Ical – Reporter

“So of all the books 27 I understand which was your favorite and why?”

Jamel Tun – First Place

“Well, my favorite would have been “Princes Academy” because it’s about this little girl who becomes a princess with every one doubting her and she just blows everyone away with it and I feel that I can be like that too.”

Elena Carballo – Assistant Librarian

“Some kids have a tendency, they come to the library like four, five months and their total reading habit they just seems to fluctuate way down low so we decided let have the joining in with us and read throughout the year, have like a number of kids reading, reading because I mean it is important to read, we really feel like sorry that not many more kids joined because I had gone on the radio and sent those flyer and advertisements but only four kids join but still for it to be a first time activity it was really good and I commend the children who took part in it.”

And to make sure they did read those in the challenge were asked to write a short book report. Despite the added assignment, it was fun for others in the challenge.

Frank McFadzen – Second Place

“My mom told me that you can learn more to read and read so.”

Dalila Ical – Reporter

“So you came in second in the entire challenge, was your mom right did you learn more, what exactly did you learn from reading?”

Frank McFadzen – Second Place

“Yes, and I learnt a lot and I enjoyed being in it.”

Dalila Ical – Reporter

“So what new things you say you learn from this whole experience?”

Lisa Leiva

“I learn how to begin stories and…”

Dalila Ical – Reporter

“Would you say it will help you in school?”

Lisa Leiva

“Yes, I even write a story that I got a hundred on.”

Dalila Ical – Reporter

“Wow, congratulation that means you would encourage other children to step up to the challenge to enter the whole reading challenge here right?”

Lisa Leiva

“Yes”

This was more of a pilot project for the organizers and the hope is to keep it going in 2015.

Elena Carballo – Assistant Librarian

“I want to do it but I just have to go through my guidelines and fix it to be able to offer it to the wider public because we are seeing children who are members of the library we want every child to be a member of the library and we do have books in there that are very good but again I don’t really see why those children they don’t come that much or they come and they stop coming to the library and we want to encourage them to come, the library is here for them we are here for them so use the services that we have here.”

Jamel Tun – First Place

“Reading for me is very well because it helps me in my studies and it opens my imagination to be and want to be more things so to anyone who is not reading I encourage them to read because it could help them in more than one thing.”

The Library has seen the support of several persons and business establishments within the country. According to Elena Carballo, assistance has also poured from outside especially for the reading challenge which saw the collaboration of Dr. Angelo Banner Joseph and Omar Ayuso in the US.
