The 44th Summit of the SICA Heads of State ended today at the Belize Ocean Club in Placencia and today the President of Guatemala Otto Perez Molina arrived to meet with other presidents and heads of delegations from the SICA member countries. The one day summit saw dialogue on matters including the migration of unaccompanied minors to the United States, regional security, and climate change, among others. But during President Molina’s visit, the Government of Belize has signed 13 Bilateral Agreements with Guatemala today in Placentia in the presence of the Secretary General of the OAS, Jose Miguel Insulza. And while these agreements will look at the Prisoner Exchange program, Serving of Penal Sentences, Operating Hours At Legal Terrestrial Entry Points; Program on Seasonal Workers; Protection, Visa Waiver for Students, Deportation, Electric Power Trade, Transmission Interconnection And Grid Connectivity, among others, the People’s United Party are calling on to the Government to act responsibly. In a release issued today by the PUP Secretariat it quotes, “The People’s United Party takes the position that because of the unjust and unfounded claim of Guatemala to Belizean territory, any bilateral Agreement between Belize and Guatemala should have been made known to Belizeans and discussed prior being finalized and signed,” end quote. The release ended urging the Government act responsibly and in the interest of national security and sovereignty to ensure that the remaining Agreements on Joint Exploitation of Hydrocarbons and an Air Transport Agreement; made by the Belize Government with the Government of Guatemala, be fully made known to Belizeans, and consulted before the same is finalized or made.
