no_imageThere is still much public debate on the Thirteen Point agreement that encourages a partnership with Guatemala and Belize that was signed a few weeks ago. One entity that has always been vocal in national matters has been the People’s National Party (PNP) and today they issued a release stating their discontentment on one of 13 points. The release states and we quote, “The People’s National Party is deeply disturbed by the clause in the Thirteen Point agreement with Guatemala which encourages Guatemalans to come to Belize for employment. PNP Leader Wil Meheia stated that in Toledo there is a very high unemployment rate and said that the main reason for that is that jobs which could be taken by Belizeans who are anxious and willing to work are being taken by Guatemalans.  And the reason is that employers are breaking the rules and paying much less than minimum wages, which Guatemalans are glad to accept,” end quote.

Maheia has been an outspoken advocate of Belize’s territorial rights, and is one of the founders of the Belize Territorial Volunteers. The release ends stating and we quote, “The Belizean people however will not stand idly by while their patrimony is stolen and given away,” end of release.
