Screen_Shot_2015-01-19_at_8.56.26_PMThe signing of the agreement between BSCFA and BSI this morning should bring the end to a rather tumultuous and dragged out negotiation, but the association is still not in the clear in that aspect, as some still oppose the commercial agreement presented by BSI. That continues to be one matter of concern for the association. Another, and perhaps even greater, is its ultimate survival as an organization. BSCFA faces decertification in its next audit for this year. CEO Oscar Alonzo told the press after Sunday’s meeting that as an organization they will see how they can best make amends with Fairtrade.

“It’s true that certain the decision that are made that are not, that do not comply with the criteria but I think we, these are made sometimes due to the economic hardships and the economic situations that the cane farmers are faced in, we will be conducting a process of reeducation with the farmers regarding with the Fair Trade criteria and we hope that through this process they can make sure they can stick closer to the criteria and we hope that when FLOCERT makes the audit that they can understand the economic reality that made the farmers make decision regarding the use of the Fair Trade funds and do not deal with them too harshly.”

And then there is the matter of the association’s sustainability following the disbursement of four million dollars of Fairtrade premiums. Already, there have been reports of employee cutbacks with more to be expected along the way.

“The financial situation will oblige us to make an adjustment but Fair Trade is not the only source that we can get fund from we need to ensure that we are putting at least some measures to show Fair Trade we are trying to comply with it, is not the amount that we put but it is the intention that I think Fair Trade will be looking at closely this year and I think this will because more is in length in trying to see how we can find partnerships with other organizations to help us fund and measures that are necessary, especially the issues within the child labor and issues relating to the environment and ensure that we comply with the requirements that international markets for sugar has.”


The association’s survival remains a priority to its officials.
