Screen_Shot_2015-01-22_at_7.58.14_PMWhile Government officials are satisfied with the work done on the Feeder Roads Rehabilitation Project in Southern Orange Walk, the same cannot be said for the work being carried on the Phillip Goldson Highway that passes through Orange Walk Town. Motorists may have noticed several points along the recently paved mile of the highway have begun to break or sink in, this, only months after its completion. Today, while at the inaugural ceremony of the road in Southern Orange Walk, we spoke with CEO in the Ministry of Works Errol Gentle who said that they are aware of the situation. The CEO adds that they have sent technical officers to conduct a detailed physical inspection of the road, including the section of the San Antonio Road that has been hot mixed under the same contractor, Emer Hernandez.

“We know exactly the areas that are showing the effects we also had a meeting with the contractor and as I said before it is a part of the contractor contract, six months after the completion if there is any defect he has to go back and remedy at his own expense, we had a discussion with the contractor we have identified the areas, I think it is three small sections and there is more than one reasons for that being that it is a new technology we have not been doing much hot mix before but the contractor does know and the reason why it has not been rectified is because of the weather we don’t want him to go remove and start replacing and then we have the very same problem.”

“So you are saying that the technique used is not the best or is it the material the problem?”

“No, the technique is the best but there is many technical problems why we are having some defects, it initially when we started we all know we had delays with WASA because we had to wait until they finish their trenching and replacing their pipe and so there were some delays but we started on a good foot and yes there has been some defects as I mention three small sections but those will be addressed by the contractor.”


And if you are wondering about the progress of the rest of the highway, CEO Gentle says that they are on top of things.

“The second phase they are just doing the earth work they are just preparing the base and no hot mix will be placed until the base is properly prepared until we are satisfied so we don’t have the same problems we also have to look at the weather sometimes we want to get things going as quick as possible we start and then the weather changes on us and that is part of the problem as well but what I have asked the contractor to do is the areas where we are just preparing the base to try and make it as smooth as possible to improve the riding quality for the persons, the road users, yes are some delays and we have to apologize for that but there has to be delays because we can’t have the road being used while they are placing the hot mix but I am hoping that it is not too much of an inconvenience and that the road users will understand that we are trying to make the road better for everybody.”


The entire project will be carried out in four phases.
