There is more discontent within the People’s United Party as the brother of Richard Harrison, who contested the by-election in Cayo North and lost to UDP candidate Dr. Omar Figueroa, is saying the party’s leadership has acted illegally by appointing attorney Michel Chebat as Standard bearer for the constituency.
Information provided to us by our colleagues at Krem indicates that Harrison’s brother Orlando took to social media to vent his frustration at the process undertaken by the party. Orlando Harrison is of the view that the people in Cayo North were to have elected the standard bearer in a convention. He adds that theparty should have issued a public notice within a specific time period to allow for persons interested to tender their application.
This was not done and Harrison says this is against the constitution. Furthermore, Harrison claims that the Party Leader had promised to inform Richard Harrison if and whenever a decision was taken on the way forward in the constituency, and calls the move a “closed secretive endorsement” as opposed to one done by “popular support”. In light of the way the matter was handled, Harrison says it is unacceptable and called on all PUP supported to denounce it quote, “with the most vigorous resentment and call for the party to return to its democratic roots and adherence to its constitution.” End quote.
Harrison goes on to call on Chebat to reject the endorsement and show the constituents of Cayo North that he supports democracy in an open, free and fair election. This afternoon, Deputy Party Leader Julius Espat spoke with a reporter of KREM News and stated that under section 13 (6) of the Party’s constitution, the Party Leader can be authorized to choose candidates.
This is exactly what happened according to Espat as the National Executive gave the party leader, Francis Fonseca the authority to sort out the situation of two pending seats in light of the upcoming municipal elections. The decision was unanimous said Espat.
