Screen_Shot_2015-02-03_at_8.18.28_PMIf you have taken a drive through the Marcus Canul Area and the hospital area, you may have come across several speed bumps that have been placed over the course of a few days. And while these bumps are indicators to slow down drivers, it has caused quite a stir amongst residents of the aforesaid areas. The gist of their concerns were based on unnecessary speed bumps being implemented on streets that have no use for them, we asked Mayor Kevin Bernard about this move from his council and here is his response.

Kevin Bernard – Mayor, OW Town

“I will answer with one plain thing, recently with the incident for example with the child that was knocked down parents called and asked us to put up bumps in that area for the safety of the children and yes the bumps have gone up and we are actually building the signs and those signs will go up in the areas of Marcus Canul area and these are white marl street and because the streets are fixed they tend to drive hard in these areas and create a lot of dust, yesterday we were at the San Francisco Street and the same thing residents are asking for us to put up two bumps in the area because the bumps becasue the dust is killing them and so we are trying to address the issue with the resident but the same time yes we do need to put up the signs that a bump exist there and these are just temporarily solutions finding at least to alleviate the dust in some of these areas and that is what we are doing.”

“Sir, it is a luxury for residents to have a smooth road now we have impediments again it is like a pot hole there being replaced with a bump, how do you answer these criticisms?”

Kevin Bernard – Mayor, OW Town

“It is always good to have god roads but it is always better to have good drivers because drivers must also adhere to traffic, because you have them speeding on roads that there should be driving 5 mph and that is the difference we are trying to alleviate the speeding on these streets and that is what our council is worried about, safety of our people.”

“How soon are we going to see the sins go up?”

Kevin Bernard – Mayor, OW Town

“Signs are already being made and they are going up shortly I believe by the end of this week or early next week most of these areas will already have signs.”

Maria Novelo – Reporter

“Do we expect that more bumps be implemented along the way?”

Kevin Bernard – Mayor, OW Town

“I am just looking at priority areas but at the areas where a lot of dust we are looking at alleviating some of the dust, of course we also wetting the streets to avoid the dryness but I don’t see us putting much more in the town but as priority comes up we will be addressing them.”
