Screen_Shot_2015-02-10_at_8.00.04_PMThe producers of the television game show “Mek Mi Rich are tonight in the hot seat as they are being taken to court. Curtis Dale Swasey, a computer programmer and former employee of the Belize Agricultural Health Authority is suing Belize Telemedia Limited and MMR Belize Limited managed by Andre Vega son of Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega under the grounds that in 2012 he developed the concept of lottery texting, whereby a fee is paid to buy numbers via telephone and a live prize draw is conducted.

Belize Telemedia Limited and MMR Belize Limited are accused of stealing Swasey’s idea and using it to produce Mek Mi Rich. How was this done? Well, reports are that BTL and MMR Belize Limited used the information given to them by Swasey under confidence to develop the program after he and BTL parted ways in August of 2014, just weeks before “Mek Mi Rich first aired.

The case was heard in the chambers of Justice Courtney Abel where a motion to strike out the case due to lack of evidence was made by MMR Belize Limited however there was a counter application to amend pleadings in the case and the matter will continue to be heard on March 10, 2015.

While Swasey was represented by attorney, Kareem Musa, BTL was represented by Magali Perdomo and MMR was represented by Naima Barrow.
