Screen_Shot_2015-02-17_at_7.58.12_PMA group of professional health care providers and missionaries are in Belize providing much needed assistance to Belizeans in the north. The missionary group from River Hills Christian Church from Ohio, USA are offering medical assistance and empowering women from the village of San Pedro in the Corozal District.

“Our mission trip is from River Hills Christian Church, Cincinnati Ohio, and we come down every year as a medical mission trip basically, the sowing was an off shoot of that trip, we started here about three or four years ago with one women and now we have a group of fifteen and we invited women from Louisville to come in and also learn how to sow, so they are here with us today we have a group of about twenty three.”

“The materials, the equipment that these ladies are using, did they had to bring it along or you all provided it?”

“We’ve ben donating for two women for the last two years, we brought sowing machines down, fabric just about everything they need and they are making some bags and some other small items for sale.”

“What will be your ultimate objective in respect to these ladies this training?”

“Our goal is to empower the ladies to start their own business in a Christian way and also to give back to their community, strengthen their communities and their households and their persons as women.”


President of the local group, ‘Beautiful Women Sewing Group’, Bertha Cob says the initiative was born back in 2013.

“Originalmente se inició hace dos años ahorita pero el  primer año que se formó solo fue un grupo  nada más entonces el siguiente año se formalizo ese grupo y después el grupo de Ohio nos trajeron maquinarias para las señoras y fue cuando iniciamos eso de la costura y bordar, este grupo nació por medio del grupo de Ohio para que aprendamos, ensenemos los que sabemos.”

“Este proyecto como beneficia a las mujeres de aquí de la aldea?”

“Ahorita exactamente no estamos viendo nada para nuestros bolseos sino estamos tratando de hacer un fondo para poder dar le vuelta al vender los artículos  que se hacen y entonces vamos hacer mucho más para de todo los que se venda conseguimos algo más para nuestro bolseo, por ahorita ya se hizo bastante y ya tenemos un poco de fondos pero necesitamos mucho más ayuda para seguir creciendo.”

“Esas mujeres cuando vienen aquí a la sesión pagan un costo o una contribución?”

“Una pequeña contribución se inicia es con un dólar una vez por semana juntamos todos que venimos aquí en este lugar y se iniciaba los fondos para comprar otros materiales para poder hacer lo que tenemos ahorita.”


According to Nancy Brokamp, sewing is just one of the projects conducted on this trip.

“The other mission groups there are some medical teams with we have three doctors on this trip, we have nurses, a pharmacy, patients are seen and evaluated and then prescription prescribe, we also have a screen team that is going around that screen houses that need screen on their windows and we have a solon team that teaches women how to cut hair, we have a construction team that usually builds a house and we have a small business that is being built for the salon and the sowing team to have a permanent headquarter.”
