Screen_Shot_2015-04-13_at_7.50.43_PMThis morning, the Orange Walk Magistrate’s court was abuzz with activity as both Area Representatives for Orange Walk Central and East Constituencies re-appeared for their on-going cases brought against them. Viewers may recall in January of this year, Orange Walk East Representative Dr. Marco Tulio Mendez was arraigned in the magistrate court and slapped with six charges including aggravated assault of an indecent nature and common assault of two minors. Reports were that the complaint made against him stemmed from offenses that go back to 2005.

Also making an appearance was Former leader of the PUP, John Briceno who was read with three traffic violations stemming from an incident on January twenty-second during which he allegedly ran over the foot of Christopher Hendricks in this gold Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.  Hendricks is the driver for cross-town political rival Gaspar Vega. And while both cases have been highly sensationalized in the mainstream media, both parliamentarians were back at court this morning and that’s where we start our coverage….. Reporter Maria Novelo has the lead story tonight…

Maria Novelo – Reporting

This morning at 9:00am sharp, former Deputy Prime Minister, who is also the former leader of the People’s United Party, John Briceno appeared at the Orange Walk Magistrate’s Court for his hearing. Briceno is being accused of allegedly running over the foot of Christopher Hendricks, former footballer and driver for Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega in an incident that dates back to last year. And while Briceno maintains that the allegations are strictly politically motivated and trumped up charges against him, the Magistrate agreed to an adjournment. Minutes after making his appearance, Briceno emerged from the Magistrates Court where he had little to say but greeted his supporters with a smile. Briceno is scheduled to reappear in court on August 3rd.

Following that adjournment, a second opposition parliamentarian, Dr. Marco Tulio Mendez, Orange Walk East Area Representative made his way to the Magistrate’s Court. Mendez was flanked by his attained attorney Dickie Bradley. Both parliamentarians shared a hand shake before Mendez made his way to the court. Similar as Briceno, within minutes Mendez emerged from the Court and made a brief comment, maintaining his innocence.

DR. MARCO TULIO MENDEZ – Accused of Child Molestation

“But it is the courts that are going to decide and I will proof my innocence there.”

Mendez’s attorney Dickie Bradley says the matter will be tried at the Supreme Court level.

DICKIE BRADLEY – Attorney for Marco Tulio Mendez

“These are matters that transpired, alleged to have transpired years and years ago so what has happen that because it cannot be tried in the magistrate court it is completely statute barred and out of time, somewhere some decisions has been made to still charge him and still take the matter to the Supreme Court so that in fact he will be coming to magistrate court and until a such time all the information and documentation are ready for it to be sent up to the Supreme Court so that is a long process first of all.”

And while the case is at the helm of the Court, Dr. Mendez expressed the need for respect and sensitivity on the trying times him and his family are going through.

“Well, it has been really a difficult time for me and for my family, of course as I‘ve always asked and we know the sensitivity and the respect for the issue itself and of course I love my family and do everything that is possible to restore the emotional stability and everything that entitles being a family.”

Dr. Marco Tulio is scheduled back in court on August 11th.

Representing John Briceno in court are Attorney’s David Moralez and Eamon Courtney. Doctor Marco Tulio Mendez attained the services of Dickie Bradley.
