Screen_Shot_2015-04-22_at_7.59.47_PMAcross the globe today, it was celebrated and observed as Earth Day which has been an annual event since 1970. On This day, organizations, entities and individuals increase their mindfulness and create a fun and sustainable event in observance. Joining those that observed the day was the Belize Sugar Industries and the American Sugar Refinery (ASR) group of companies. The company says they are committed to continually strive to reduce their carbon footprint, reduce and recycle their waste and increase their resource efficiency. Today, officials at the sugar industry took a pioneering approach of integrating sustainability directly into its business model, driving significant impacts on the ecosystem, environment and public health. Zeidy Cruz is the Regional Environmental Health and Safety Manager for Belize and Mexico.

“Many times when you look at sustainability we hear about environment and environmental protection but with ASR how it is divided we have two sections for the environment basically and one is compliance, environmental compliance and the other one is sustainability, we have to do what everybody has to do which is abide by the regulations and that is the environmental compliance section but we also need to prepare the company for the future and that is where sustainability comes.  Looking at 2014 and this is recent data because it goes in preparation with the 2014 report we are now at 63 so at least we can see that there is an improvement because we are aiming for greater than 95% recycling and what they are doing and I will mention it as is come more ahead and one of the things that has contributed to this is because of the audits that the people are doing , because of the waste audits and what recommendation they have and how to reduce waste that is being done in almost all the facilities. Sustainability is all about thinking about tomorrow, how to make tomorrow better and how to make the future better because like I said sustainability is the key to remain competitive out there in the market so it is up to us to live in order to dream and you have to realize that through a sustainable world and it all begins here and now.”

And in celebration of Earth Day, BSI/ASR reflected on its impact across all aspects of the supply chain and shared a progress report on the company's 2020 sustainability goals. After the presentation, the officials planted 48 mahogany trees near their cooling pond as a symbol of their 48 years in operation. Officials say the trees will act as a natural coolant to help reduce solar radiation.
