The festival begun yesterday as students of secondary school presented their work. Today, primary schools took to the stage at the Corozal Civic Center. Some twelve schools presented a series of art pieces. Maria Correa is the Coordinator for the Festival of Arts this year.

“The presentations consist of drama in the drama category, music and dance and this morning we had a very good dance items.”

“Definitely, some of these presentations will make it to the Golden evening which will be held tomorrow?”

“We will be having the Festival of Arts Golden evening tomorrow at 2 o’clock here at the civic center; I will be showcasing all the Golden schools that won starting from the Primary and the secondary; however we will be having some good items from the Pre-schools and the Special-eds groups tomorrow.”

“So would you say that you as part of the education department are satisfied at the caliber of presentations that you are seeing?”


Maria Correa – Coordinator, Festival of Arts


“Well, so far we are satisfied that they are participating, however they need to work some more.”

“It is gradual improvement every year, I assume?”


Maria Correa – Coordinator, Festival of Arts


“Well, this year we have seen a great improvement from years ago, yes.”


Correa says that art makes up an important part of the students’ curriculum and is pleased to see that students have been improving each year and that parents have been supportive of the program as well.

“Art is a subject and it is in the curriculum so this is what the children are learning to be creative, to participate and to act and be part of their school, so they are representing their school right now and art is a subject, yes.”

“So, it plays a vital role for them?”


Maria Correa – Coordinator, Festival of Arts


“Yes, this is where we can see what the children have learnt, however in some presentations you can see what input the children and the teacher put in and we have to give thanks to the parents who are really supportive this.”


At least twenty schools made their presentations in the afternoon session of the Festival of Arts. The Golden evening is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at the Corozal Civic Center. The best of all presentations will be highlighted at that event.
