It may have been his months of preparation, or his prior experience before the competition that led 11 year old Jafet Munoz to victory, whatever the case maybe the reality today is that the title of Orange Walk District’s best speller will remain with a determined Trial Farm Government School student. On Friday, Munoz was among the ten students participating in the district finals of the 21st National Spelling Bee zone eliminations and he emerged as victor. It’s a huge accomplishment for the school and today in his honour, a short assembly and mini parade around the schools periphery was held. Our news team stopped by the school today and we spoke with both Munoz and his coach Faustino Juchim.

“It was super easy for you?”

JAFET EFRAIN MUNOZ – Spelling Bee District Champion

“Yeah, but in the reserve list, when they gave me the first round I got nervous.”

Maria Novelo - Reporter

“Did you ever think you would win the first place?”

JAFET EFRAIN MUNOZ – Spelling Bee District Champion

“Yeah”

Maria Novelo - Reporter

“So you are confidence, so how do you feel going to the finals in June?”

JAFET EFRAIN MUNOZ – Spelling Bee District Champion

“Well, I feel so excited being in the finals and I hope that I will win.”

Maria Novelo - Reporter

“Tell us about how you got prepared, who helped you to prepare for this?”

JAFET EFRAIN MUNOZ – Spelling Bee District Champion

“My teacher and my grandparents because after they telling me to study all these 300 words.”

Maria Novelo - Reporter

“Tell us about the preparation getting him there?”

FAUSTINO JUCHIM – Coach/Teacher

“First of all, I have to commend him because the onus is in him I mean he was dedicated and a part of that I strongly applaud the parents because the mother was right behind him and also as I told my staff this morning teachers put their effort but I mean at the end of the day it is the child education that counts because we can do as much but if they don’t take their studies serious you can’t do much so I really commend him and his family.”

Maria Novelo - Reporter

“So it is a true testament where the family, the teachers are putting and watching his full potential?”

FAUSTINO JUCHIM – Coach/Teacher

“That is right, that is right.”

Maria Novelo - Reporter

“So that is what you would say as a teacher this is the recipe to success?”

FAUSTINO JUCHIM – Coach/Teacher

“I strongly believe that and I am convinced, I think that if the teachers put their effort, the child dedicated themselves, they are getting support from their parents and then above all God’s blessing that is what counts.”

Maria Novelo - Reporter

“So now looking forward to the grand finale on June, what is that like intense, longer hours?”

FAUSTINO JUCHIM – Coach/Teacher

“Definitely, hard work, dedication and more, more time, and we are going for the big win.”

The 21st National Spelling Bee championship is slated for June 5th in Corozal Town. We wish all the spellers the best of luck!
