Last Friday the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association, BSCFA announced that were found with nine non-compliances after being audited by FLOCERT, the global certification body for Fairtrade. Non compliances usually spell trouble for organizations under the umbrella of Fairtrade. But according to the Chair of the BSCFA Committee of Management, Ezekiel Cansino, this time around, the non-compliances filed against the BSCFA are not major and will not affect the association’s certification with Fairtrade.

“We receive the result and we were informed that we have 9 non-compliance but none of them were major and we are very happy for that because it will not affect the certificate of fair Trade and the Organization but we will be working on that as soon as we get the corrective measures we will be sending them today.”

“Corrective measures, like what and then do you have a time frame?”

EZEKIEL CANSINO – Chair, BSCFA

“On how we will be working on and reduce that noncompliance, we have to sit and plan and then send it to them on how we will be working on that issues.”

“From what you know the history on the Association and is this the first time that the Association ah been faced with so many non-compliances giving it that it is not major?”

EZEKIEL CANSINO – Chair, BSCFA

“Well, for the past years we had more noncompliance and with major ones and with this one well they are not as serious ones.”

“Would child labour would be included in these nine?”

EZEKIEL CANSINO – Chair, BSCFA

“No, no because we are already working with child labour and we already doing the project in some areas.”

“Sir, since the splintering of the Association where do you foresee BSCFA going from here, do you see extinction coming for you guys soon or.”

EZEKIEL CANSINO – Chair, BSCFA

“NO, none at all we are sure that BSCFA will stay for long and or forever because we are already getting some information from cane farmers who left us that they are willing to comeback and we know that the numbers will continue to grow.”

The exact wording of those non-compliances could not be revealed by Cansino as yet since he claims the committee has not met to discuss it fully. It is of note that one of the associations biggest worry is the disbursement of six million dollars of Fairtrade premiums to its membership. Cansino says that it is one of the nine non-compliances but that the association had taken measures before the audit to help lighten the repercussions of that move.
