This week we have been reporting several instances of police using excessive force against civilians in both Corozal and Orange Walk districts. And while the complaints mount, the Orange Walk formation is trying to change the public perception of the police and in turn boost officer’s morale. Today, after a uniform inspection of the officers, an outstanding police member was honoured as Officer of the Month for July. The initiative is with the collaboration of L&R Liquors, Elite Promos and the police department.

“Our intention is to work along with the public as much as we can to try as much as possible get the people feel secure, we are having enough foot patrols on the streets and we cannot have the policemen just working and not being appreciated so we decided to start a monthly thing; the last Thursday of every month, a police officer of the month, in recognition of certain police officer hard work throughout that month, what that entails, discipline, punctuality, neatness, relationship qualities and it is all together, we have a committee comprised with Mr. Palomo and four more NGO’s and sergeants hat sit down and select that officer and this occasion was possible through some support and sponsors, thanks to Elite Promo’s and L&R liquors we have started our police officer of the month.”

Mr. Kevin Alvarado – Owner Elite Promos

“The initiative to start and appreciate the hard work of the police department is something that Elite promos has always seen very close and try to help the police department as much as we can also in donating jerseys for the police department here in Orange Walk and we also commend the police officers of the month and we teamed up with Mr. Tillette and we decided to recognize them and we saw that it is something good and it is a good initiative to boost up the moral of the police formation here in Orange Walk as well.”

ELDRED NEAL- L&R Liquors Representative

“From my perspective representing a fair share of the government and as much as the business community through L&R Imports Liquors we recognize the main street of Orange Walk and all the different businesses and the COP who come out to lend and to keep our street safe so this initiative is in no way is enough for our believe to say thank you for these officers so as representative of the business community and through the media houses we trust that we can do this every month and as other businesses come on board we fully intend to make this a monthly gesture and in fact we are challenging officer to as competitive and in doing so we are saying to any officer of this branch if you can win the officer of the month in three consecutive months we are going to find five hunfdrd dollars and make it be your incentive.”

The hope is to have many more business organization sponsor the event which is being planned for every end of the month.
