The Belize Tourism Board held the 2015 Tourism Conference in San Pedro this past weekend. In an interview with the Director of Tourism Karen Bevans, she spoke on several issues of importance within the industry. One of these things she said was the crime situation and how it has affected the industry. She adds that they are working with the police to boost security and encourage businesses to do just that.

Karen-BevansKaren Bevans- Director of Tourism

“The crime situation is a challenge for us and what we are doing is things like brochures to advice travelers when they land at the airport where to go, where are the good places, the safe places to go. So further to that we worked with the Commissioner of Police and he has put more police officers in San Pedro for example and you have heard of the restructuring done in Caye Caulker, he is increasing the number of officers in Hopkins so he has been looking at all the tourist areas to see how he can boost up security. Additionally he had recommended to us that we work with stakeholders in getting security cameras. We took action and we are already implementing security cameras around the entire Fourth Street Tourism Zone and most of the stakeholders are moving towards getting their place camera ready.”
