Next week Cane farmers will be receiving their second payment for cane delivered to the BSI/ASR mill. The highest payment is being received by the test group of the Progressive Sugar Cane Farmers Association while the lowest is being received by a group of BSI. The cane price estimate for second payment is seventy dollars and forty-five cents which is an improvement over last year’s final price of sixty-seven dollars and fifty-two cents. This year the estimated average price per ton of cane is a record breaker, according to BSI/ASR. But while the milling company is boasting about an excellent crop, Chair of the Committee of Management at the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association, Ezekiel Cansino, says they were expecting a little more.

“Estamos contentos con el pecio que hemos logrado hoy atreves de la calidad pero aun así hemos dicho de que de parte de BSCFA estábamos esperando un poquito más unos dos dólares más de lo que estamos consiguiendo pues tendríamos que esperar para el tercer pago para ver cómo vamos a terminar.”

Industry stakeholders have boasted that this has been a record year especially in terms of sugar produced, given the challenges faced. This year the factory produced a hundred and forty-two thousand tons of sugar which was above the previous record of a hundred and twenty-five thousand tons in 2014.

Ezekiel Cansino – Chair, COM, BSCFA

“Es un ano record de todo los aspectos pero según otros caneros han estado contando que en los 70’s se llegó a este precio y un señor dijo que consiguieron mucho más pero por hoy si estamos muy satisfechos por todo el esfuerzo que hemos hecho.”

The highest payment is received by test group 17 of Patchakan of the Progressive Sugar Cane Farmers Association with over 23 dollars. BSCFA’s test group B13 from San Narciso received $22.23 and BSI received $18.55. The 2014/2015 sugar crop saw a late start which led to the inevitable – sugar cane was left standing in the fields. Stakeholders are working to assess this and unofficial reports so far indicate that more than twenty thousand acres were left unharvest.
