The Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association was formed last year after the Government of Belize amended the sugar act giving cane farmers the freedom to break away from the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers and form their own group. Automatically cane farmers who divorced from the BSCFA and joined the Corozal Sugar Cane Producers stopped benefitting from Fair Trade premiums since the BSCFA was the only association certified at the time. But that is now a thing of the past because after much hard work the CSCPA has been certified by FLOCERT. According to Chairman of the CSCPA Elvis Canul the certification is valid from the 24th of August to the 24th of May 2016.

“This brings a great moment for our cane famers because by being certified we will be entitled to premium that is catered for the small cane farmers and it helps to sustain the high cost of production of cane so definitely this is a big achievement for our Association to be certified.”

“When you talk about Premium do you have an idea or an estimate amount?”

Elvis Canul- Chairman, CSCPA

“At this moment I wouldn’t want to speculate on that because it is something that will be worked out with the Fair Trade agent that will be here shortly to address that particular distribution of the premium.”

While the premium figures are not yet known, Canul says the money will be put to good use and all members of the association will benefit from it.

Elvis Canul- Chairman, CSCPA

“As an Association know we have the responsibility to ensure that we put a plan in place that will benefit equal and fair distribution to our members so it is something that we will be discussing further ones we know how much is the allotted amount to us and then based on that we will make plans and this is something that will be ongoing as we get feedback from Fair Trade.”

Currently CSCPA counts with 342 members. As an association, they were responsible for the delivery of over 80% of the total production of 2014/2015 crop season. They expect to grow both in membership and production.
