Screen_Shot_2015-08-31_at_8.35.00_PMThe Chikungunya disease, literally named for its crippling effect, has slipped its bonds in Africa and Asia and is now in Belize. For 2015 there are four confirmed cases so far, three in the Corozal District and one in Belize City. As for the cases from the Corozal District the patients hail from Altamira Village.

According to Interim head of the Epidemiological Department, Dr. Marvin Manzanero, out of all the sample’s sent four came back positive for Chik-V.

“What type of treatment are they receiving?”

Dr. Marvin Manzanero- Head of the Epidemiological Department

“Chickengunya is a viral disease just like dengue which needs a specific treatment and it is manage just like dengue which is basically pain killers, make sure the people are properly hydrated so there is no treatment for chickengunya such.”

What would it be your advice to the general public here in Corozal?”

Dr. Marvin Manzanero- Head of the Epidemiological Department

“Well, I guess part of what we did this weekend the clean-up campaign and ensure that the environment doesn’t have any potentially infectious area ad it is basically a clean-up campaign most of the issues associated with dengue/chickengunya 80% of the preventative activities is really community driven and it has to do with having a clean environment so whatever you are doing for dengue whatever you are doing for malaria will work the same way for chickengunya and the cases are from Altamira Corozal but don’t have the specific details of those patients.”

Last year Health authorities confirmed the first three cases of the mosquito borne Chikungunya virus in Belize in the month of November.
