An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale occurred this Monday morning in the island of Roatan Honduras. The quake was felt in cities like La Ceiba and Tocoa, and some parts of Belize. The Comisión Permanente de Contingencias (Copeco) reported that the phenomenon occurred at 7:36am with 50 seconds and had the following coordinates, 17.04 kilometers North and 86.20 West.
According to Jose Jorge Escobar from the Department of Physics in the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras, the phenomenon was caused due to the activation of a local failure and accumulation of force on the border Cocos and Caribbean plates.
Fortunately no damages were reported. According to information provided because of the unpredictability of these events, Copeco recommends that the Honduran people take necessary precautions so as to avoid and minimize damages. For this year Honduras has had a total of 62 earthquakes this includes 7 earthquakes in the past month, 2 earthquakes in the past 7 days and the earthquake felt today.
