The political race is on and both major political parties are intensifying their campaigns across the nation. In northern Belize, the People’s United Party remains confident about a victory. In an interview with John Briceno, he told us that the UDP has been tried, weighed and have been found wanting. This says Briceno is ultimately what separates the UDP from the PUP, as unlike the UDP government, a PUP government would have invested money on the people, on the productive sector which has been suffering as of late.
Honorable John Briceno – PUP Area Representative Orange Walk Central
“Farmers in the north were going through a severe crisis, it took the Honorable Jose Mai who called the media to take them to Blue Creek in that area to show them the thousands acres of rice and corn and grains that has gone to nothing because it has not rained to show them cane fields where they are so bad because there is no rain now, we are not blaming the government for the lack of rain but what we are saying here we have Petro Caribe monies where we are paying 1% interest rate, their concern is you know what I will give my nephew millions of dollars out of contracts because that is how the scam is taking place right now, they give contracts to all their friends and their cronies who they are creaming up to the Belizean people, right now you look at this highway there are certain areas that already sinking and we are spending millions of dollars where these areas are sinking and it is not even six months since they have paved this highway and it is already breaking up, people want to see quality work, fine if you are doing streets do it properly, go to Belize City tens of millions of dollars have been spent on the streets of Belize city yet the government refuses to assist the Orange Walk Town council, they are not punishing Mayor Kevin Bernard and it councilors, they are punishing the people of Orange walk Town, that monies for Petro Caribe all of us are going to for it but coming back to the crisis and the issue of street and people, we the government could have taken some of that Petro Caribe money and put a special fund and lend it to the cane farmers or to our farmers because they are the productive sector, if we are not producing we can’t pay the street are not going to help us produce but it is the farmers and the sugar cane farmers that they are planting all the cane that was planted in June when they expected the rain in June/July has gone to nothing, the cane is not growing because they don’t have water yet they owe the bank at high interest rates 12, 14 ,16% , the government could have set aside 25 million and fund to a Credit Union or to a bank and lend it to the agriculture 5% so they don’t have to pay that high that will help them to enable them to try to recover and that is the point that I am making. It is about people at the end of the day, a government is elected to make lives of Belizeans better, and this government has failed miserable in that aim or that goal to make lives of Belizean better.”
