floodHardest hit by the low pressure system over the weekend was Belize City and as a result prompted the Prime Minister and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) to host an impromptu press conference on the crisis. The fact is Belize is a country under sea level, but over the weekend residents experienced the worst period of flooding in recent years. Flooding was recorded in most parts of the City and most affected are the low laying areas such as Lake Independence and Belama. Minister of Labour, Local Government, Rural Development and National Emergency Management, Godwin Hulse along with the Prime Minister Dean Barrow gave a situation report on the areas most affected…..

Honorable Dean Barrow – Prime Minister of Belize

“What is happening is a disaster, is a crisis has precipitated an emergency with a small e, we or course give thanks to the fact that as bad as it is it could have been worse, I know that there is a state of emergency declared in neighboring Quintana Roo, we hear about bridges collapsing in Guatemala so that of the areas that has been most directly affected we in Belize seemed to be comparatively better off , perhaps that is not the way to frame it we are not as badly off, as the other areas in the other two countries, my senses is that the city of Belize has been the hardest hit from what I gather, from what I can tell, both in terms of the messages that I have been sent, the briefing that I’ve been given the updates I’ve been provided with NEMO and CEMO have done very well indeed in trying to cope initially with the problems.”

Honorable Godwin Hulse - Minister of Labour, Local Government, Rural Development and National Emergency Management

“We have some difficulties there and in Orange Walk we have shelters there as well, we have some flooding in the San Pablo and San Jose area and we are monitoring the water there is continuing to ride, in the south as Prime Minister mentioned we had an issue with Hope Creek and Sarawee but the water has receded, reports about ten minutes ago that it is rising again but we don’t expect any significant rise, I was in the area yesterday late.”

The floods created a wave of criticism from residents in the City as well as outsiders who claim that the rains have unveiled the hap hazard development of the city streets. As you know, more than 100 streets were rehabilitated and paved under the Belize City Council under the leadership of Darryl Bradley but there were no proper drainage system put in place. The media asked the PM if the revelation will work against his party in the coming elections to which the PM responded that he does not fear the score card of the people….

Honorable Dean Barrow – Prime Minister of Belize

“We will do everything that is required to put things back in a state of proper repair to assist those that have been affected with whatever the needs are.”

We understand that Cabinet will meet tomorrow to discuss the damages caused by the flooding.
