dewaliAnd before we leave you tonight, members of Belize’s Hindu Community are busy celebrating their new year. It is called Diwali, or the festival of lights, a time when Hindus all over the world pray for blessings. The scenes on your screen are from celebrations in India, which included dancing, games, skits, firecrackers, fireworks and other entertainment. It is particularly associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and marks the beginning of the fiscal year in India. This special day, is widely celebrated by Indians residing all over the globe.  Similar to the Easter season, this date varies every year and falls normally between the months of October and November following the traditional Indian calendar. Here in Belize, there is a gathering at the Belize Hindu Temple to celebrate the Festival of Lights.  The Indian community comes together and lights a candle after which everyone continues to socialize, greet and wish one another a successful year.
