Political rivals Ramon “Monchie” Cervantes and Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega were back in court today in Belize City. Viewers may recall that Vega filed a lawsuit against Cervantes Junior for defamation of character after the Cervantes family released a recording of a phone call allegedly made to them by Manuel Castillo; the man believed to be the mastermind behind the murder of Ramon Cervantes Senior who was kidnapped on July 2nd and murdered the following day. During the conversation the man purporting to be Castillo, claimed that Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega was involved in the murder of Cervantes. The DPM refuted those allegations and right after preceded with the lawsuit against Cervantes Junior after his request for a full and unequivocal public retraction was not met by Cervantes Junior. So today’s event would see the convergence of many Vega supporters who waited over four hours, even when it rained. Vega spoke to our colleagues at 7News after the session….

Honorable Gaspar Vega – Filed lawsuit against Cervantes

“I am satisfied with what I have done, I don’t have any control over the case and the right thing for me to do was to take it to court because I don’t think anyone should have allowed such defamation, assignation of character by any means so with that I am satisfied.”

“Do you think you will have a favorable outcome?”

Honorable Gaspar Vega – Filed lawsuit against Cervantes

“Of course I do, I sincerely do”

And while Vega is satisfied for taking the matter to court, he too took two media houses to court including Fiesta Fm. Attorneys for the defendants are equally confident that the case will be ruled out on the grounds that no evidence or “such recording” exists….

Screen_Shot_2015-11-12_at_6.23.29_PMSaid Musa – Attorney At Law

“No primary evidence of any such  evidence, there was no tape in evidence all what was in evidence was what we call secondary evidence made by the witnesses who heard a portion of what took place at Mamayal farm very inadequate as presented by the claimant.”

Ramon Cervantes Jr.

“Like the attorney said the claimant has failed to proof his case against me and there is no primary evidence to substantiate to what he is claiming against me so.”

Eamon Courtney – Attorney At Law

“There is no evidence before the court that my client Fiesta broadcast this alleged statements against Minister Vega, they have not proven it, they try to get it through Kelly Guzman through a transcript again judge rule that that was not admissible so the submission we made to the court this morning was that in the absence of that evidence Mr. Vega cannot succeed in his claim against my client for libel, sound very technical but libel is a very technical area of the law.”

Both are expected back in court on December 22nd.
