BEL-LogoIn December of last year the Belize Electricity Limited made a submission to the Public Utilities Commission requesting for an eleven percent increase in the Mean Electricity Rate from $0.35 per kWh to $0.3885 per kWh.

Today we can tell you that BEL is requesting for another increase of 39 cents in an effort to cover the Full Tariff Review Proceeding (FTRP) which covers a time period of five years.

In a public notice that was issued of Friday, BEL stated that the reason behind the request is to

  1. Ensure that the true cost of power can be reflected
  2. That the electricity rates are stabilized in the long term and
  3. In order for BEL to expand on its services and improve service reliability.

BEL is requesting that the increase in the Mean electricity rate be approved for the years 2016-2021.

A public meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday February 9th at the Belize Biltmore Plaza Hotel so as to allow for comments to be made on the application. The comments are due on February 19th followed by a written decision that is due on February 22nd. The decision will become final if there is no objection by March 7th. If there is an objection, an Independent Expert might be given the opportunity to finalize the decision no later than by the end of June.

Information concerning the FTRP will be accessible by Wednesday at the PUC office on Gabourel Lane as well as the office located on the Philip Goldson Highway.
