sabidoToday the murder case against Osmar Alex Sabido officially commenced at the Orange Walk chapter of the Supreme Court as two witnesses for the prosecution were called to the stand this morning, Dion Faber and Hanna Cambranes.

Many of you may recall the name Osmar Sabido as he was accused back on February 28th, 2011, of the murder of his girlfriend, 21 year old Christie Carrasco.

Carrasco, who was described as a vivacious and young mother was killed just one day before the start of International Women’s Month in what was deemed to be a case of young love turned into domestic abuse.

The 21 year old received two stab wounds, one to the chest and one to the abdomen and neighbors attested that her then boyfriend, Osmar Sabido was responsible for inflicting the fatal wounds.

Sabido was indicted for the murder of the 21 year old and has since been remanded at the Belize Central Prison awaiting his court hearing.

Today at around 10:00 in the morning Sabido was escorted to the Orange Walk Supreme Court accompanied by his attorney, Oscar Salgado, who was appointed to the case and is representing Sabido pro-bono. The prosecution who was represented by Javier Chan under advisement of attorneys Shanidi Chell and Jaime Burns called a total of five witnesses to the stand before the days end.

After the court case was adjourned our news team approached defense attorney Oscar Salgado, who is also the defense attorney for the high profile case of Bert Vasquez, who was indicted for the murder of Girl Scout, Jasmine Lowe. As for the case against Osmar Sabido, his attorney is confident that he has a strong full proof defense in the case as his client is claiming self-defense.

Oscar Salgado- Defense Attorney

“We have a defense and the defense of self-defense and provocation will arise that he was in fact acting in self-defense, he was the person who was attacked and that in fat he was so provoked in those circumstances when he acted in self-defense that he lost temporary control of his entire emotions and his being and so that is what the defense will be putting forward as I said but the defense is not contending that my client was not there the defense will be contending that in fact he acted in self-defense and that he was so provoked that what happened was a result of extreme provocation and self-defense a combination of the two.”

According to Salgado the case against his client has been delayed for far too long.

Oscar Salgado- Defense Attorney

“This case has been overdue, five year is unacceptable for anybody to be locked up on a ere allegation, a man is innocent until proven guilty so again the administration of justice in Belize might take time but I am convinced that the wheel of justice in Belize turns slow and it turns surely and that he will be given a fair trial and I look at the evidence that is before me and there had been times that the evidence has been very strong in this particular case like I said the evidence is circumstantial most of it and that I have been convinced that in fact he acted in self-defense and because this case is being conducted by the judge without a jury, the judge sits as the judge of the fact and of the law it will be then my ability to convince the judge as tribunal or fact  that in fact what Osmar Sabido will say  in the stand is the truth he was the only person that knows besides the deceased what really took place and that even if he had in fact swung out at the deceased he did so as a result of being extremely provoked and in self-defense.”

Today’s session of the murder case adjourned at around 3:00 pm and will resume tomorrow at 10:00 am. The case is expected to conclude on Monday March 14th, 2016.
