Screen_Shot_2016-04-04_at_8.37.35_PMOn Friday night the Philip Goldson Highway was witness to yet another traffic accident. Luckily this one was not fatal but what is worrying is that it happened on the same stretch that claimed the life of 40 year old Trial Farm resident Hilberto Coyoc just a day before.

Reports are that around 8:20pm, 54 year old Julia Arana was crossing the highway near the San Martin Gas Station in Trial Farm Village Orange Walk when she was knocked down by a Toyota Hilux traveling in the direction from Corozal to Orange Walk. The vehicle was driven at the time by Orange Walk South Area Representative and PUP Deputy Leader Honorable Jose Abelardo Mai. According to Orange Walk Police, while Mai tried to avoid hitting the victim he was unable to do so.

Superintendent Selvin Tillett- Orange Walk Police Department

“He immediately stop to render aid an transported the female to the Northern Regional Hospital, the victim one Julia Arana, 39 years old domestic of Trial Farm Village, she was observed with injuries to the head and immediately underwent surgery and thereafter transported to the KHMH where she still remains under critical conditions, a urine sample has been obtained from Mr. Abelardo Mai and he had been served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution and police continue investigating this issue.”

“Did Mr. Abelardo Mai willingly accept taking that sample?”

Superintendent Selvin Tillett- Orange Walk Police Department

“He volunteered the sample because either when police takes the sample you accept or refuse but he willingly give the urine sample.”

“Is the investigation indicating that Mr. Mai or the other party involved or anyone of them was under the influence of alcohol as it is being reported out there?”

Superintendent Selvin Tillett- Orange Walk Police Department

“At this moment I cannot say we need to determine that via toxicology exam as that is the reason the urine sample being taken from Mr. Mai to determine whether he was drinking or not and the same should be done from the victim.”

While reports are that the 54 year old ran across the road without clearing both lanes, dodged a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and then met face to face with Mai’s vehicle, the victim’s youngest son, popular cyclist Nissan Arana, is yet to confirm exactly what happened since he was not at home when the incident occurred.

Nissan Arana

“I don’t know what really happened because I was not there you know, when they called me she was already at the hospital with a critical condition with a punctured lung and a rib damaged and the hips and she got a good knock in the head and some people are saying that she jumped in front of the vehicle and I don’t think my mother would do something like that and then she doesn’t have any family problem to start with, I am the baby from the house 28 years old, I could maintain my mother and myself so I don’ think my mother would reach to that condition to do something  like that.”

From what Arana’s father is saying, he and his wife were crossing the road to catch a taxi when the accident played out. For Nissan Arana what is important for now is that his mother gets back on her feet.

Nissan Arana

“Apart from the punctured lung and the ribs but in the longer time it will heal back and so all what we are praying for is that of the cats can we will see what they are going to tell us, what she will need to do or what so they can’t operate her because she suffers pressure and so.”

“Is there any sort of doubt in your mind that she has acted carelessly in dealing at the crossing of the road at that particular area, is there anything in your mind that would say I am not sure but maybe?”

Nissan Arana

“Well, I can’t say that because people when they are baby or what most parents teach us is to watch on both sides of the road so I don’t doubt she never do that but at the speed that you go you can’t move at that speed of the vehicle or like you can’t avoided so I think that the person who was driving I don’t know if he was under the influence of alcohol or what because I was never there so I can’t tell you yes he was under the influence of alcohol.”

A cat scan was to be conducted this afternoon to determine the extent of any brain damage. Police today told us that charges have yet to be levied against Mai as their investigations continue and they are still awaiting the results of the urine sample.

As for the Orange Walk South Area Rep, he not speaking to the media and his attorney, Senior Counsel Eamon Courtenay would only say via email and we quote “Mr Mai continues to pray for the full recovery of Mrs Arana. As to the unfortunate accident, we have no comment to make at this time." End of quote.

Just before news time we spoke to Nissan Arana who told us that the results of the CAT scan performed on his mother has not been revealed to him but he was told by doctors that she is in stable condition.
