Screen_Shot_2016-04-04_at_8.37.17_PMAlso in their immediate plan to improve and upgrade infrastructure in our town, the Orange Walk town Council in partnership with the BSI/ASR and the Orange Walk Police have launched a campaign for the remodeling and restructuring of Independence Plaza, which has been in the shadows for quite some time. Today when we spoke to Mayor Bernard about the project he told us that he commends the initiative of BSI/ASR and the Orange Walk Police Department in taking a step forward in giving back to the community in a project that will bring the area back to life and create major benefit to families from the area and also residents from throughout Orange Walk Town.

“I think that it is partnership like these that goes a long way because when you have a company such as BSI/ASR wanting to give back to their community in one way or the other and in this case the rehabilitation of the Independence Plaza is so benefitting because it will see a lot of improvements in that area, people uses that area a lot even though it may not be visible to many and it will bring much needed life to that area when the residence in the area and for families who travel that area wants to go and recreate in that area and I am sure that the police department will benefit a lot because now there will be now proper lighting there will be electricity in the area, we want to see our parks to become live again just like we did with Central Park and we are focusing on the Independence Plaza at this point in time and so definitely you should see some activity for our families and children.”

Works have commenced in the area with the town council working on restoring electricity and preparing for the other works that will be done in the area.

“What the council has had to do is to go in there and put in the electricity we are right now installing the service entrance so that we could provide electricity, there should be better improvement of lighting, I know BSI is working on the painting and the statics of the area but it is also in the end to promote environmental safety I mean BSI/ASR has launched a very aggressive campaign on a clean environment because a clean environment there is a better community and a better community and I think I applaud their efforts for that and so I welcomed the initiative we are doing our part as a council to ensure that we work along with them to get the area prepared.”

Also working closely in the initiative is the Orange Walk Police Department and when we spoke to officer commanding the OWPD, Superintendent Selvin Tillett, he told us about their involvement in the rehabilitation project.

“We intent to clean it and paint it and make it more family friendly park what we mean by that I mean where the children can go out and have things to play and the police is definitely assisting in whatever they can but we will also be responsible for the upkeep and security of the area and so we want to make it as safe as possible and you now it is close to the river and we will take precautions as to build certain barriers to avoid children going towards the river.”

While the Orange walk Town Council and the Orange Walk Police department are working on preparing the area for the rehabilitation project, BSI/ASR is working on creating environmentally safe equipment to install in the area to upgrade the park using eco-friendly ideas. We will have more on their plan to promote the area as an environmentally safe area in tomorrow’s newscast.
