The long standing territorial dispute between Belize and Guatemala has recently seen increased aggressions from Guatemalans in from of military hostility, breach of our territorial waters and lands and most recently high Guatemalan officials openly claiming not only Sarstoon Island, but also the entire Sarstoon River. Today the Belize Territorial Volunteers issued a release condemning the most recent hostility by Guatemalans and also pointing out GOB’s continued, deliberate negligence concerning all matters involving Guatemala’s aggressions.
As a result of this BTV believes that the awareness campaign being carried by the group, on this issue must be maintained, in an effort to sensitize Belizeans as to the reality of the situation that is impacting our borders.
And as a commemoration of the 157th anniversary of the signing of the 1859 Treaty between the governments of the UK and recognized the border between Belize and Guatemala, the BTV is organizing a trek to the border at the mouth of the Sarstoon River, on Saturday, 30th April 2016 and the Northern Territorial Volunteers will be organizing a similar trek to Garbutt Falls monument on the same day.
According to the group this trip is being organized as a peaceful, yet direct effort to demonstrate support for not only maintaining, but also regaining our territory so as to ensure that all 8867 miles of our territory remains a reality, today, tomorrow and forever.
