btvToday Will Mejia of the Belize Territorial Volunteers and Orlando De La Fuente of the Northern Territorial Volunteers were scheduled to be interviewed by three media houses from Guatemala: Prensa Libre, Canal Antigua and El Diario.

The interview was programmed to take place on the Belize side of the Sarstoon but according to Mejia, at the last minute the Guatemalan press asked for a change of venue and asked for them to travel into Guatemala, a request which Mejia refused.

Will Mejia- Leader BTV

“We agree that we would meet at the Belize side of the border and they called back and said that if we could meet on their side and I am totally in disagreement with that and I am sure is Orlando that meeting don’t seem that it will happen unless they decide to come over to Belize but as of now that is not happening because I am not going to go to Guatemala if they want to talk to us they would have to come to Belize.”

Carmelita Perez – CTV3 Reporter

“Now Sir, did they gave any reason as to why they changed the rules what was it that were unable to make it to Belizean territory and prefer for you guys to cross over?”

Will Mejia- Leader BTV

“I was not clear but apparently the Captain of their boat had a communication with the military over there and I did not get the details so I know they had something to do with the military and their Captain.”

According to Mejia, they accepted to be interviewed by the Guatemalan Press in order to bring across three important points: First to educate the people of Guatemala about the purpose of the trip on Saturday to the Sarstoon and the importance of the 1859 Treaty, secondly to relate Belize’s version of the shooting in the Chiquibul and lastly to clear BTV’s name.

Will Mejia- Leader BTV

“What I’ve would have done is to communicate with them I believe a lot of Guatemalans are not aware of the 1859 treaty which clearly demarcated Belize’s border, also I would let them know that their President wasn’t being truthful because there is no way that the President of Guatemala he could know a 13 year old was killed by BDF, they was fire in the area cross fire happened and it could have been their own people that shot the kid so there is no until a clear investigation is concluded then they could say certainly what happened or how the kid got killed but until then it is all allegations and I believe that their President is not communicating that to their people so what I would like to do is to communicate to the people of Guatemala that the Territorial Volunteers are a peaceful group of people and that they never bear arms and that they don’t believe in arms, we are a none violence group and all what we want to do is to maintain 8,866 square miles of Belize that belongs to us and that is what we are determined to do to ensure that we do not lose a square centimeter of land.  They have the wrong idea of who the Belize Volunteers they are.”

Carmelita Perez – CTV3 Reporter

“There is a high possibility that you won’t be getting that opportunity this time around, if you do get called afterwards would you accept to go and do that interview?”

Will Mejia- Leader BTV

“Only if it is in Belizean territory I would accept to do the interview and the message would be the same communicate to the people of Guatemala via their Press that the BTV’s good name.”

As mentioned before by Mejia, the only way for the meeting with the Guatemalan press to take place is if they agree to do it in Belizean Territory.
