Screen_Shot_2016-05-03_at_8.29.37_PMOver the weekend, hundreds of northenos took part in the 8th annual cancer walk organized by the Orange Walk Cancer Support Group celebrated under the theme ‘I can, you can, we can stand against cancer.

As is the case every year, the walk commenced at 5:30 in the morning from the San Martin Gas Station and the objective was the same: to raise awareness about the disease, to pay tribute to those who have lost the battle and to show support for those who are currently fighting the dreadful disease.

Makeda Anderson

“This is the first time I am participated and I’ve lost a family member due to cancer and my workplace and also the Youth Council wanted to come out and support so that we can bring awareness to the people. I feel very good about it because it is always nice to support others and cancer is something very difficult for any family member especially when you have lost some one due to cancer so it is a very good feeling to come out and support others.”

Veronica Cadle

“I myself I am a four year survival of cervical cancer by the grace of God I am still here and we need to put him in our lives realizing that he is the only hope that we have in these times that we are living in so wo many disease coming on so I thank him for coming out here and supporting those others and those who have gone on before me and that God continue to comfort their relative and friends.”

“Is there any message that you might have for other people who are battling with cancer?”

Veronica Cadle

“Well, never give up even though you do the medicine from the doctors I still do my herbal medicine but first of all and most of all let us put God in our lives because he is the only hope that we have.”

Ellon Swift

“We traveled about fourteen hours yesterday just to get here to support but we are behind 100% and my sister in law was diagnose with breast cancer last year so we went through all that with her and we have been in support ever since.”

The walk culminated at the Central Park where a short ceremony was held, and while the number of participants seemed less this year as opposed to the previous years, the president of the Orange Walk Cancer Support Group, Badra Coleman, was not dissatisfied.

“We still had a huge crowd I know this is a long weekend and some had other compromises that they had to keep but the support is there and that is what we need we sold out our shirts and now we are here to support those who are fighting cancer with their sales that they have.  The pink one usually is in demand because of the breast cancer and the green is for cervical we have seen a lot of those cases and the blue we support the men with prostate cancer.”

The walk though, could not have been a success without the assistance of the business community.

“Our golden sponsors CGI, Ezone and all the workers and Cuellos Distillery for donating five thousand dollar which is an yearly donation that we look forward to and each and every one who did their part even if you bought just one ticket which is a dollar we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

A health fair was also held at the Central park where a number of items were on sale in order to assist the patients along with their families with financial assistance.
