At about 4:30 yesterday evening the road leading to the village of San Felipe in the Orange Walk District turned deadly as it claimed the life of a 55 year old Orange Walk business woman and left two others injured in a tragic traffic accident. Reports are that Elba Concepcion Gongora was driving a 1990 blue Kia Sportage heading towards San Felipe Village and upon nearing a curve she lost control of the vehicle which overturned several times until coming to a stop.
Accompanying Gongora at the time of the accident along were 47 year old Luis Briceno Sr. and 36 year old Amalia Cocom, a resident of Yo Creek Village, Orange Walk. Preliminary investigations indicate that Gongora died on the spot after receiving several head and body injuries while Briceno sustained injuries to both his legs and Amalia Cocom escaped with minor injuries.

“Upon our arrival on the left side of the road police observed a blue Kia Sportage with Orange Walk license plates with extensive damages to the windshield was broken and at the top of the Kia was damaged, the front bumper was off, about three feet from the Kia Sportage there was the lifeless body of a female who was later identified as one Elba Gongora, a resident of Belize/Corozal Road in Orange Walk Town, initial investigations is that Mrs. Gongora was travelling from the direction of Orange Walk heading to San Felipe where upon reaching the curves where close to the horse track she lost control of the vehicle flipped several times, there were other occupants in the vehicle, one Luis Briceno also a resident of Orange Walk he is suffered injuries to his leg and Amalia Cocom a female resident of Yo Creek, she suffered minor scratches.”
Today when we spoke to family of the deceased, they were still in disbelief at the sudden loss of their loved one. According to family, who had spoken to her just moments before she left from home yesterday, the 55 year old was very excited to be going to do some shopping for a catering job that she had scheduled for this Saturday and her family says that she will always be remembered as a hardworking caring individual.
