VegaOver the weekend Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega along with Foreign Minister Hon. Wilfred Elrington represented Belize at the 7th summit of the Association of Caribbean States held in Havana, Cuba. The two day summit surrounded the subject of the crisis that is currently being faced by Venezuela among other issues.

Although no official report has been issued by the Government of Belize as to what transpired at the conference, it is being reported by international news outlets that during his address at the summit Minister Gaspar Vega took the opportunity to address the "existential threat" to Belize's sovereignty that has come as a result of recent tensions between Belize and Guatemala and the annexation of the Sarstoon. Minister Vega also added that Guatemala’s claim is a violation of the Cumbre de la Comunidad de Estados LatinoAmericanos (CELAC) agreement.

Guatemala‘s president Jimmy Morales, who was a surprise attendee to the summit, responded to the accusations made by Minister Gaspar Vega by stating that the Government of Belize is the one that has not respected the peace between the countries and reproached Belize’s DPM by saying that Belize should not be using the forum to bring up the issue that it must be settled at the ICJ.

Recently Belize has gotten the support from several regional, hemispheric and world organization forums in relation to Guatemala’s aggressive tactics and claim of the Sarstoon River.
