Violence erupted in the streets of our northern neighbors, Chetumal after citizens were barred from attending a sitting of the Quintana Roo state congress. According to a report on the Mexican news page ‘Diario La Verdad’ yesterday’s congress sitting was interrupted by an estimated 200 individuals who are opposing the appointment of a new senior state auditor.
When the congress decided today to reconvene without a public audience, crowds broke through police barricades and attempted to storm the session hall as Police responded with tear gas.
Meanwhile demonstrators who managed to get inside the meeting of the Quintana Roo legislative chamber, shouted 'Out, out' during the meeting. Protesters view the appointment of a new state auditor and public prosecutor as an attempt to avoid investigations of corruption and misappropriation of funds by current governor Roberto Borge.
Injuries have been reported to both protesters and police.
