The post mortem examination performed on Luis Antonio Magana, the 29 year old Orange Walkeno who committed suicide while inside a cell at the Orange Walk Police Station, has concluded, ruling his death as “COMBINED MECHANICAL ASPHYXIA AND VENOUS LONGESTION DUE TO HANGING.”
As we reported on Friday, Magana was taken into the Orange Walk Police Station on Thursday June 16th following a report of domestic abuse. Reports from the Orange Walk Police indicate that when they went to check on him after 12:00 on Friday morning, Magana was hanging by his neck with piece of cloth that he tied to the cell bar - he used a belt to secure the knot.
Magana’s death left several unanswered questions and Orange Walk police are looking at several angles in the case, including what led Magana to take his life since there was no indications made to police of his intention at the time of his arrest, but most importantly how did Magana have his belt inside his cell.
According to Officer Commanding the Orange Walk Police Formation, Superintendent Selvin Tillett, an internal investigation is still ongoing to determine if the incident was as a result of negligence on the part of police officers and any person or persons found to be responsible will be dealt with accordingly.
