On Tuesday the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BBCI) issued a release chastising the Government of Belize on the nationalization of Belize Telemedia, stating that the acquisition was not made under the parameter of the law, also adding that GOB’s prolonged negotiations will create a negative impact on all Belizeans. Today Leader of the Opposition spoke on the release issued by the BBCI commending them for their stand on the matter and supported their stance that the acquisition was not made in the best interest of the Belizean people and in the end the entire process was a

concession on the part of GOB towards the previous owners of Belize

“I am happy that the Chamber of Commerce finally came out, they would tell you that they were careful, trying to be cautious and they wanted to look at all the facts, they met with the Prime Minister and they met with us and then they took out their Press Release, their position as to the whole fiasco in the Nationalization of BTL. The chamber has always has always been cautioning the government on this, on the acquisition of BTL and saying that they must follow the law because they have not been following the law, when they acquire BTL on the first time around it was found that it was unconstitutional at the Caribbean Court of Justice this time around when they renationalize it in 2011 they went through the entire process to go all the way to the Caribbean Court of Justice and the court was going to give their ruling in October of last year the Prime Minister then decided when he realized that he was at the end of the line and he had no more other options available to him he then realized that he had to go and settle, now the UDP government authorized the Prime Minister to go and settle, now remember what the Prime Minister was making their big deal about BTL was this accommodation agreement that it was a secret agreement, now here the Prime Minister turns around and has its own secret accommodation agreement, why do we say it was a secret accommodation agreement well because somehow it seems or he has given the impression that he went into a room in a hotel with Mr. Ashcroft and just settle and basically gave in to everything that Mr. Ashcroft was asking for.”
