Since Monday we have been reporting on the trip to the Sarstoon taken over the weekend by a group of Guatemalan civilians. The Guatemalans who belong to a social media group called “Belice es de Guatemala” claimed to have circled the entire island venturing well into Belizean territory, bearing Guatemalan flags and Guatemalan maps including Belize as part of their territory.

On Tuesday Minister of Foreign Affairs spoke about the trip, saying that he was not surprised at the presence of the nationalistic civilians, today leader of the opposition Hon. John Briceño shared his input on the situation, stating that he is not at all taken aback by the FM’s response to the alleged intrusion since his reaction to the entire Guatemala Claim has always been concessionary towards them.

“At the very least I think that the BDF should have gone to them and warn them and tell them that they are in Belizean territory, maybe we don’t want to stop them or arrest them or anything but at the very least they should have stop them and tell them you are in Belizean territory and you need to respect our sovereignty, I am not surprised by the Foreign Minister weak response that has been his way of operating his modus operandi whereby whenever it comes to Guatemala he tries to be more conservatory to them and very weak in his response we in the PUP has been saying that when it comes to the sovereignty of this country we need to be aggressive, we need to be forceful we need to be clear that people understand where are our boundaries are and that we are going to stand up and defend every single square centimeter of land or sea or water that belongs to the country of Belize.”

Briceño also stated that the lack of the coast guard presence at the Forward operating base attributes to the situation in the Sarstoon and added that lack of space is not an excuse for the coast guard to be absent from the area.
