Belize and Guatemala have had their share of difficulties recently over the border dispute that exists between both countries, but the two countries have recently reached an agreement in criminal matters.
According to a report on the Guatemalan media, Foreign Ministers for both countries came to an agreement which indicates that criminals convicted in either party may serve sentences in their home country which allow for a more effective rehabilitation of prisoners.
The agreement will last for 10 years and is automatically extended for equal periods unless either party terminates it through a written notification through diplomatic channels, which take effect one year after the claim.
According to the report, the document signed is based on the agreement of a negotiating framework and measures of confidence-building between Guatemala and Belize signed on September 7th, 2005.
The intent of this agreement is to maintain and deepen friendly bilateral relations until the territorial, insular and maritime dispute between the two countries is resolved permanently.
