Belize_35th_anniversary_september_celebrations_logo_banner-2As Belizeans prepare to celebrate this year’s Independence under the theme “Sovereign and Strong - Together as one” there are a number of events that have been planned ahead of time with the aim of raising the spirit of the September celebrations.

Among that list is the National Song Competition organized by the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) which offers Belizeans an opportunity to showcase their talent as it relates to the art of local music.

The competition is divided into two main categories…Carnival and Patriotic. NICH received numerous submissions and at the end 20 applicants were selected. Those applicants are scheduled to perform their song on Saturday night at the Memorial Park in Belize City.

Holly Edgell – Communications Officer, NICH

“We have about 22 finalist in all and the contest itself will be each finalist to all compete this coming Saturday at the Memorial Park in Belize City before the judges and the crowd and that starts at 7:30 and one of the awards that will be giving is People’s Choice so that is why we really want people to go on to the website and listen to the song and then vote, so we will find out who will win the carnival song and who will win the Belize National song which is more of a patriotic song and then there will also be that People’s choice.”

The voting is currently opened to the general public and individuals also have the have the opportunity to listen to the beats before voting for their favorite participant.

“Basically, you will log on to the internet and go to the website, there on the home page you will see an area where all the performers are listed and you can either click Carnival song or Belize song; for example if you click on Belize song you will get all of the entrance for the Belize song then you would click on play button next to the picture, the pictures of the performers, click on the play button, listen to the song then right next to that you will click on the little area that says I like and then you click vote and that is all you have to do and you can vote for more than one but you can only vote once a day from a particular IP address or device so if you have your favorite, you cannot be sitting the whole day voting for him  or her over and over again from your computer because we want to make sure that you can leave comments right next to the voting area and share on the contestants.”

The contestants will be judged based on originality, creativity as well as on their interaction with the audience.

“The judges will be looking for the song itself, how good is it with the lyrics, does it get the crowd fired up, is it creative, I think one of the major issues or reasons we have the finals in a live setting is for the judge to see how the performer interacts with the audience, that is a really big part of it, you will see the performers encourage their fans to come out and we want numbers of the public to come out too because we really want to give the performer the opportunity to have a great audience to interact with people and that would play a role for the judging.”

The event will be free of cost and the general public is invited to attend and offer support to each participant.

Holly Edgell – Communications Officer, NICH

“It’s a free event so you can just come and enjoy a night of music, it is a family event so you could bring your family out and I think it is good time considering everything that we gone through with hurricane and other issues it is a really pretty good moment just to appreciate some of the good things that we do have going on our country from a culture perspective and so NICH and the National Celebrations Committee are very pleased to be out with you and so to kick off the carnival season, the September season early with the National song competition."

The first place winners of each category will win a grand prize of ten thousand dollars and a trophy while the second place winners will receive a total of three thousand dollars along with a trophy.
