Prime Minister Barrow also spoke on the Organisation of American States’ report which has exonerated the Belize Defense Force soldiers in the April shooting death of 14 year old Guatemalan national Julio Rene Alvarado Ruano.

In reaction to the shooting incident, the Guatemala Government immediately launched a slanderous campaign against the BDF accusing them of being unprofessional and human rights violators, without first carrying out an investigation.

PM Barrow expressed satisfaction with the OAS report and said that perhaps Guatemala should demonstrate contrition.

“It is clearly vindication where we are very pleased, we always knew though that was in fact the position, still a little worried as to how the Guatemalans will react now because this is clear vindication for the BDF and expose the falsity of the position taken by their President, taken by their Foreign Minister, taken by their officials, so I am hoping that the will be mature enough to accept that they were wrong and that the allegation made against the BDF were utterly unjustified and that they owe Belize an apology.”
