As previously reported, the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) had scheduled a support rally for last Saturday but it was postponed until this coming Saturday, October 29th. The news tonight is that the rally has turned into a demonstration based on the back and forth between the Union and the Ministry of Education which insists that Government will not pay school managements the contributions for striking teachers’ salaries.

“On Saturday we are having a national demonstration and rally here in Belize City and one of course to thank those individuals groups and organizations that gave us tremendous support during our strike action and again to the public to help us to call for the government that the teachers deserve to get their salaries so this is an invitation to the public to come out on Saturday the ad should be running later today and we start from 9 o’clock in front of channel 5 and we will parade through the street of Belize City and have a rally at the memorial park, all branches have been informed and invited to be a part of the rally. It was supposed to be a support and thank you rally but it is now a demonstration now that we are not satisfied the way the ministry or the minister of education in particular is trying to take advantage of our teachers so we need to demonstrate that we are not satisfied with that and that we again we are not doing anything illegal.”
