noimageTonight members of the business community here in Orange Walk Town are advised to be on the lookout for an individual who is passing himself as a worker of the General Sales Tax Department. Reports to our newsroom, which have also found their way on social media, indicate that on Saturday November 26th, 2016, sometime around 3:00 in the evening, a male person of Creole descent visited Diamond Supermarket located in the Trial Farm Village here in Orange Walk Town to purchase a bottle of water.

But apparently the true intention of the individual was not to purchase water. Sources tell us that after purchasing the item, the said individual exited the store and headed to his vehicle, a white 2013 GMC terrain.

Shortly after, the individual stepped out of the vehicle and once again re-entered the store this time claiming to be an officer of the General Sales Tax Department. The individual also alleged that he was conducting private investigations across town with regards to businesses that do not provide customers with a receipt after the purchasing of an item. Reports are that he threatened the business owners that they will be penalized for not issuing receipts and will be required to pay a large sum of money and will also be taken to court.

We understand that when the business owners requested for the male person to present his identification card, he did so in the split of a second not giving the owner’s time to verify his identity. We are told that after suspicions arose among witnesses that were present at the time of the incident, the person immediately fled the scene before any picture could be taken from him, however, the number of the license plate from the vehicle has been recorded.

We contacted the GST office today in hopes of receiving some answers but were told that the only two persons authorised to speak on the issue were in meetings and we should call back at 3:00pm. When we did so we were informed that the individuals were still in meetings and will not be available until tomorrow. We will keep following the story.
