Still on the topic of visas, the hearing took time to look over the process of distribution by Foreign Service offices. The Auditor General’s report cited that there were a number of irregularities in the processing of visas by embassies and consulates. One particular issue was the fee related to visa applications for foreigners from the People’s Republic of China. According to report, the $8,000 repatriation fee charged to Chinese nationals was suddenly discontinued.

“Mr. Chari I don’t know if you have a law or a process that was sent out in a Memo on December of 2010, one would have thought that it would be in place for 2011 certainly for the period which you were auditing and I would like to know and request that we find what the source of that authority was for the discontinuation of the 8000, if we could get some research on that to see who made that decision if it was by law?”
