There have been numerous reports of Human Smuggling rings in Belize. There have been Police arrests and confiscation of vehicles in the past, but no significant bust of any sort of operation. But perhaps greater efforts will or are going towards cracking down on those activities from outside of Belize, as the Auditor General’s report noted that a foreign service assisted her investigation with evidence that human smugglers were given Belizean passports and nationality. Just who that Foreign Service is could not be identified, because as the Auditor General pointed out, it is very classified information.

“You said that it was also observed that an alleged human trafficking/people smugglers were able to obtain Belizean Nationality by registration and I guess passport because you are dealing with it in the passport report.”

Carla Faber, Head of Audit Team

“We found confidential letters where the Director lists these people; we got it from the confidential letters memo.”

Aldo Salazar, Chairman, Senate Select Committee

“That it was an alleged?”

Carla Faber, Head of Audit Team

“Yes”

Senator Mark Lizarraga – Representative for Chamber of Commerce and Industry

“Mr. Chair can we request a copy of that memo and that letter please?”

Aldo Salazar, Chairman, Senate Select Committee

“Do you have a copy of the memo?”

Attorney

“What is being referred to here is a memorandum which was received confidentially from another source abroad in which confidential communication is maintained so that if it is required it will of course be disclosed, if it would perhaps be kept confidential otherwise that would be appreciated given future communications.”

Aldo Salazar, Chairman, Senate Select Committee

“That would have to be discussed in our deliberations privately.”

The Senate’s hearings will resume on the first week in January and it is expected that former Director Maria Marin will be next on the list of testimonies.
